Online Webinar Series - The inaugural lecture by Prof. Arun Agrawal, Wednesday, 14 October 2026

The Indian Society for Ecological Economics (INSEE) is organising an Online Webinar Series to creating opportunities to engage with new ideas, perspectives, and emerging areas of scholarly inquiry. The idea is to bring globally acclaimed scholars into conversation with young researchers, academics, and practitioners.  

The inaugural lecture will be delivered by Prof. Arun Agrawal, Pulte Family Professor of Development Policy and Inaugural Director of the Just Transformation to Sustainability Initiative at the Keough School of Global Affairs, University of Notre Dame, USA.

The lecture, titled “Food Commoning” will explore the intellectually as well as practically significant question within the study of commons: how do practices of commoning emerge, evolve, and contribute to transformative change? For an ideational outline, a brief abstract follows:

Abstract:
Research on the commons has now begun to pay substantial attention to the commoning practices,  leading to the creation of the commons. But understanding how legible commoning practices themselves emerge from a context of general and generative commoning remains understudied. With a focus on food commoning, defined as collective recurrent processes for preparing, sharing, and consuming food based on generalised reciprocity and mutual obligations to produce and reproduce collective lives and subjectivities. 
The lecture will examine the relationship of commoning to transformative change. Emphasising the historical evolution of food commoning, it will emphasise on three key pillars of generative commoning to the study of commons: the constitutive context, the variations in commoning processes and outcomes, and the shaping of commoners’ subjectivity through commoning practices.
